What Matteo Ruggeri could add to Aston Villa’s left side

Aston Villa are reportedly close to signing Atlético Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri, but the move should still be described as a reported transfer until the clubs announce it officially.

According to The Times, Villa have agreed a fee of approximately £17.1 million and the Italian defender is expected to undergo a medical.

If completed, the transfer would strengthen an important part of Unai Emery’s squad. A modern full-back must provide more than defensive cover. The player needs to understand when to advance, when to remain alongside the central defenders and how to support attacks without leaving the team exposed.

Ruggeri’s experience in Italian and Spanish football could prove useful. His background suggests familiarity with structured defending, wing-back responsibilities and patient possession.

At Villa, his role would depend on Emery’s instructions. Ruggeri could offer width when an attacking player moves inside, helping Villa stretch opponents across the pitch. He could also provide a safer passing option during buildup rather than forcing the team to attack centrally every time.

The major question concerns adaptation. Premier League full-backs regularly face fast wingers and rapid transitions. Ruggeri would need to adjust to the speed of matches while learning Villa’s defensive movements.

The reported price also matters. If Villa complete the agreement near £17.1 million, they would be acquiring a player with experience at major European clubs without paying the premium often attached to Premier League transfers.

This should not be presented as a glamorous signing guaranteed to transform the team. Its value would come from balance, reliability and tactical flexibility.

Villa’s Super Cup performance against PSG demonstrated that they can compete against elite opposition, but squad depth will be essential during a demanding season. Another credible option on the left would give Emery greater freedom to change formations and manage workloads.

Until an official announcement arrives, this remains a possible transfer rather than a completed signing.
